Our goal here at The Field Shelter was always to start rescuing farmed animals. We decided to start with sheep, partly because they’re Jojo’s favourite animal, but mainly because we have the most experience caring for them from our time volunteering at Farm Animal Rescue in Australia. We raised the funds to fence in our largest field for them and to purchase and erect a field shelter from the first six months of profits from the guesthouse.

We own the land that The Field Shelter is on so we can be sure that the animals we rescue will never have their home taken away. We currently own 14 acres of land in the Scottish countryside. We’re really focussed on generating a steady income stream to fund the care of our rescue animals and this is how the rescue and the guesthouse work together.

On April 23rd we officially became a sanctuary when we rescued sweet little Abby, a five day old lamb. Sadly Abby was only able to be with us for four weeks as her birth defects were so severe that she was unable to live a life without pain. Despite the heartbreak we’re so happy that we were able to give her the loving home that she deserved.

Six weeks later five more lambs arrived at The Field Shelter, we named them Martin, Matilda, Mòrag, Murray, and Mia. They were rescued from horrible conditions but they’re currently thriving in their new forever home.

Once the pandemic is over we plan to offer a way for people to meet and connect with our rescued animals (if they would like to meet people!) and to learn about veganism. We also plan to launch a fundraiser or Patreon in Summer / Autumn 2021.

Looking at the even bigger picture, to expand The Field Shelter, we’ll need to raise the money to fence in the other section of our land (this is a woodland area that will be perfect for pigs), to clear the ground (for some reason someone once used the woodland as a landfill), to erect a coop and safe recreation area for hens, and to fix two large barns that are in a state of disrepair.

We’re so excited about this project and we can’t wait to update you as The Field Shelter expands. If you’d like to keep up to date with what’s happening please sign up to our mailing list below!
